Microsoft Debuts Work IQ and $99 Microsoft 365 E7, Extending Copilot’s Agentic Reach

Microsoft is attempting what IBM tried with the 1964 System/360—create a unifying layer that lets one architecture (here, Work IQ) span every business workload. A similar bundling moment occurred in 1995 when Office 95 married Word, Excel and PowerPoint, and again in 2011 when Office 365 shifted the suite to subscription SaaS. The new E7 plan welds AI, security and management into a single monthly fee, signaling a maturation phase: AI is no longer a novelty add-on but the ‘OS’ for knowledge work. If Microsoft succeeds, enterprises could be locked into a proprietary context graph for decades, echoing how SAP’s R/3 cemented enterprise data workflows in the 1990s.
