Google Enables Username Changes for Legacy Gmail Accounts After 22 Years

Beginning 1 April 2026, Google is rolling out a feature that lets U.S. Gmail users replace the username portion of their @gmail.com address without creating a new account or losing any data.

Focusing Facts

  1. Each account may alter its Gmail handle a maximum of once every 12 months, and no more than three times over the life of the account.
  2. After the change, the old address is automatically retained as a non-deletable alias that still accepts mail and remains valid for sign-in across Google services.
  3. The update applies only to consumer @gmail.com accounts in the United States during the initial rollout, excluding Google Workspace or non-U.S. users.
