North Korean soldiers dying on a foreign front echoes the 1960s–70s era when Pyongyang sent commandos to Vietnam and Syria, or when Soviet pilots secretly flew in Korea (1950-53); minor powers have long traded manpower for technology and aid. The museum-plus-pact signals a revival of bloc politics reminiscent of the pre-1991 Cold War, where formalized alliances (Warsaw Pact 1955, Sino-Soviet Treaty 1950) structured military commitments well beyond any single conflict. Over the past decade sanctions have driven Russia and DPRK toward mutual dependency: Russia needs expendable manpower and shells, North Korea craves energy, cash and rocket know-how. If codified, a five-year defense programme could hard-wire this axis into East Asian security calculations for decades, accelerating missile proliferation and undermining UN sanctions regimes. Yet history also warns of fickle autocratic alliances—the 1961 Sino-Soviet split unraveled in barely a decade—so on a 100-year horizon the durability of this pact will hinge less on ceremonies than on whether each regime can survive domestic and economic pressures.
