U.S. FCC Adds Advanced Robots & Grid-Scale Inverters to Covered List, Freezing New Chinese Imports

Washington has used technology blacklists before—CoCom controls on Soviet-bound computers in the 1950s, the 1987 Toshiba-Kongsberg machine-tool embargo, and the 2019 Huawei/5G ban—but this is the first time physical, network-enabled robots have been treated like spying telecom gear. The move fits the accelerating techno-nationalist trend that began with the 2018 U.S.–China tariff war and has since widened to chips, EV batteries, and now embodied AI. By weaponising FCC certification—the gatekeeper for any radio-connected device—the U.S. is signalling that supply-chain trust, not price, will determine access to its market. Over a 100-year horizon the decision may matter less for today’s trade volume than for setting precedent: critical cyber-physical systems (robots, grid gear, autonomous vehicles) may fragment into security blocs much as rail gauges or electrical standards once did, shaping where innovation clusters and whether global robot platforms converge or splinter.
