On 12 October 2026 the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences selected U.S. economists Robert E. Hall and Michael Woodford as joint recipients of the 12-million-kronor Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences for building the microeconomic foundations that modern central banks use to manage inflation and recessions.
Focusing Facts
- Hall (Stanford, b. 1943) and Woodford (Columbia, b. 1955) raise the cumulative count of economics laureates from 99 to 101 since the prize’s 1969 debut.
- The Academy’s citation singled out their work on “microeconomic foundations of macroeconomic stabilisation,” including forward-guidance models now embedded in post-2008 monetary policy.
- Despite being announced with the Nobels, the prize was created by Sweden’s central bank in 1968 and remains contested by Nobel family representatives.
