SpaceX Opens DoD Negotiations for Multi-Billion Dollar AI Compute Contract

Big militaries have long chased private tech firms for computing breakthroughs: IBM’s 1956 SAGE air-defence computers, Sun Microsystems’ 1990s workstations for NSA code-breaking, and Amazon’s 2013 CIP cloud for the CIA all show how commercial innovation repeatedly migrates into classified use once costs fall and performance gaps close. Musk’s pivot mirrors that arc, but also flips the script: a launch company is using orbital cash-flow to undercut entrenched cloud giants on Earth, compressing supply chains of rockets, satellites and now GPUs under one vertically-integrated roof. If consummated, the deal would entrench a single billionaire-controlled vendor deeper inside U.S. command-and-control networks—a concentration risk not unlike AT&T’s pre-breakup monopoly in the 1970s.
